Weather Warning

Cold Surge # 12 will cause windy night

December 24, 2019
2.30 p.m.

Diagnosis: Cold surge # 12 continues its progress over the Central American region, arriving in Costa Rica on Tuesday; but at the same time it has weakened; Therefore, rainfall in both the North Zone and the Caribbean has been very dispersed and of weak intensity, with recorded amounts that have not exceeded 5 mm during the morning. With respect to the wind, the maximum gusts have so far reached 85km / h in the north of Guanacaste.

Forecast: Tonight and early Wednesday morning, the windy pattern is expected to be reinforced in the mountainous sectors of the country, with gusts of wind around 80-90km / h in the crossings between mountains. Wind gusts will be noticed occasionally in the lower parts of the Central Valley and the North Pacific, with estimates between 30-40km / h throughout the night. With regard to rainfall, their behavior will be dispersed and of short duration both in the North Zone and in the Caribbean, with amounts estimated in 12 hours between 10-20mm, with maximums of 40mm in a very timely manner.

The effects of this cold surge will persist until Wednesday morning.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, and in areas prone to landslides.
• Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
• Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
